The University of Illinois Open Archives Initiative Metadata Harvesting Project

OAI Provider Workshop
Sept 19, 2001
8:30 AM – 2:30 PM

The Commons (2nd Floor)
Grainger Engineering Library Information Center
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Handouts & Presentations

Audience: This workshop is intended for those interested in using the Open Archives Initiative (OAI) Metadata Harvesting Protocols to share metadata describing items held in Library and Museum collections. It's assumed that participants have existing collections of metadata and are aware of the work of the OAI (www.OpenArchives.org), but it is not assumed that all participants are currently providing access to metadata collections using OAI protocols. It's also assumed that participants are familiar with the work of the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (www.dublincore.org).

Outcomes: The workshop will consist of technically oriented presentations and discussions focused on OAI Metadata Provider Service implementations and tools. Participants will leave with a better understanding of how to implement an OAI Metadata Provider Service, a better knowledge of tools and resources available to assist in the construction of OAI Provider Services, and a fuller appreciation of the practical issues associated with metadata sharing and harvesting using OAI metadata protocols. The workshop also will be a forum for the sharing of ideas about and experiences with the OAI protocols.

Discussion & Wrap-up
1:30 PMOpen discussion of issues and concerns, including (but not limited to) – metadata format transformations, alternate metadata fomats, multi-lingual metadata, roles of and relationships between metadata providers and metadata harvesters – All Participants.
Discussion will be led by Bill Mischo, Engineering Librarian, University of Illinois at UC.
2:30 PMAdjourn.
A closed meeting of Illinois – Michigan Joint Projects Steering Committee will follow workshop.

Preparation: Before coming to the workshop, participants should review the background and details of the OAI metadata protocols and the Dublin Core metadata schema. Participants also will need to have at least a basic understanding of XML. Basic knowledge of XML Schema and XSLT, though not essential, will help participants get the most out of the workshop. While materials on all these topics and more will be included in the packet provided each workshop participant, participants are encouraged to review the following Web-accessible information resources before coming to Urbana:

Hosts: The workshop is being hosted jointly by the University of Illinois and the University of Michigan. Both institutions are providing access to metadata using the OAI protocols and both institutions have received grants from the Andrew W. Mellon foundation to research and implement OAI Metadata Harvesting services. Crucial to the success of these metadata harvesting projects is the availability (in large quantity) of high-quality metadata describing significant scholarly information resources. By hosting this workshop we are hoping to encourage development of additional OAI Provider Services, particularly within the CIC. We also hope to initiate and cultivate relationships with current and future OAI metadata providers.

Registration: Advanced registration is required. Registration is limited. Please use the online registration form or email Tom Habing at thabing@uiuc.edu.
